“Dear Sagetravels.com, Pls, I booked a ticket on Arik Air, unfortunately, I may not be able to travel again. Can you help me keep the ticket open.”

“Hello! I booked a ticket on Air peace and I have used the first flight but something came up, I may not be able to use the return ticket on that day. What should I do?”

“Hi Sagetravels.com, I got your number on your blog and I need your assistance. I want to book a return trip but I don’t know when I will return. How can I keep the return date open?”

These and more are some of the questions travellers ask concerning open ticket. For the sake of those that don’t know what open ticket means, let me explain briefly. Open ticket means a ticket that has a departure date but no specific return date. That is a flight ticket you have a date you want to travel but not sure when you will return.

Why People Open A Ticket

People opt for an open ticket for many reasons. For instance, when a round trip fare is cheaper/better than a one-way ticket. Secondly, when there is an emergency, a traveller may decide to open the return ticket. Whatever the case may be, an open ticket is not a new phenomenon. Unfortunately, most airlines do not offer open ticket again but there are still ways of getting an open ticket.

How To Open A Ticket.

There are several ways to open a ticket. All are discussed below.

Through Airline

If you booked any of the domestic airlines like Arik Air, Air Peace, Aero, Dana etc and along the line, something came up that will not all you to travel as proposed. All you have to do is to contact the airline and ask them to open the ticket for you. A service charge may apply.

Through A Travel Agent.

Most travel agents can get you an open ticket. Why I recommend a travel agency is because they have a booking platform assigned to them by the airlines to carry out bookings on their behalf. With that platform, they can make bookings, change tickets and others with ease. For instance, if you book Arik air flight and the airline change flight time, automatically, you cannot have access to the ticket again. If you book through an agent, and there is a change, the agent can still have access to the ticket and work on it anytime.

The Airline Website

You cannot open a ticket on the Airline (Arik Air, Air peace, dana or med-view) website. But if you want to open your ticket, this is how to do it. Go to any of the domestic airline website (Arik Air, Air peace, dana or med-view) enter your departure date, then select a far return date that is less expensive and completes the booking. When you want to return, change the ticket and pay the charges (change and fare difference fee if there is any). That’s all.

Things To Consider Before Booking An Open Ticket

There are things you need to consider before booking an open ticket. Below are things you seriously need to find out before you say okay, I want to book or open my ticket.

Ticket Rules: Every airline has rules governing their tickets. These rules are very important to the airline and the passengers. Read ticket rules on the airline website to see if the rules are okay for you. Some tickets are not changeable, not refundable etc.

Change Fees: Some ticket class of service does not require an additional charge to make a change (like business class and first class) while some (economy) require additional cost to change a date, route or time. Find out the amount it will cost you to change a ticket just in case you decide to change the return date. Can you afford the change fee? Find out before you book.

Ticket Validity Period: This is very important. You need to know the ticket validity period. Some are valid for a year like Air Peace, Azman, Dana, Arik Air while some are just for 3 months like Overland. Don’t assume they all have the same validity period. Find out the validity period.

No-show fee: No-show fee is the fee passengers pay whenever they miss a flight and want to reschedule for another date or time. This is different from the fare difference you will still pay (if there is a difference in new date or time). Before you open a ticket, check the No-show fee.

I am writing this article based on the number of requests I get concerning Baggage allowance. I know most people are actually concerned about the excess baggage cost. They just want to know how much they are going to pay in case if they exceed the free baggage allowance.

I know someone that canceled a flight just because of the baggage allowance. The main reason why he canceled the flight is that the amount he was supposed to pay for excess baggage was high and after calculating, he found out another airline would be better if he adds the ticket cost and cost for excess baggage.

So I am going to review every detail concerning Air Peace baggage allowance so that when next you are travelling, you will mind how to pack. I am a big fan of “Travel Light” anyways and I would advise you to pack what is necessary when travelling.

Air Peace baggage allowance and cost varies in two ways. First is in the class of service and second is the route. What I am trying to say is, your class of service will determine the weight of free baggage allowance. The class of service here means economy and business class while the route is the domestic and regional route.

The weight of free Baggage allowance and cost for excess Baggage in Economy and Business (Domestic Flights Only)

Air Peace free baggage allowance for an economy class on all domestic flight (Flights within Nigeria) is 20kg (kilogram) while business class free baggage allowance is 40kg.

Cost for excess baggage.

The cost of excess baggage for both economy and business class is N500 per kilogram.

The weight of free Baggage allowance and cost for excess Baggage in Economy and Business (Regional Flights Only)

For regional flights, economy passengers are entitled to 30kg free baggage allowance while business class passengers are entitled to 40kg baggage allowance. Air Peace regional flights are from Nigeria to Accra, Freetown Banjul Dakar and Monrovia.

The Cost of excess baggage (regional flights only)

The cost of excess baggage for both economy and business class passengers is $3/N1,200

I believe there is no need to explain why business class passengers free baggage allowance is higher than the economy passengers.

Children and Infant Baggage Allowance on Air Peace Flight

Infants pay 10% of the adult ticket fare in all Classes and is entitled to a maximum of 10kg of luggage in either Economy class or Business Class. This infant luggage can be checked-in or used as carry on Cabin baggage.

Each Adult or Child passenger is allowed to carry only one piece of hand luggage weighing not more than 6kg in Economy class and 10kg in Business class with size not exceeding 45x33x20 cm in addition to a carry-on purse or handbag or Laptop.

How to Pay For Excess Baggage

All excess baggage cost will be paid at the airport. As you arrive at the airport, your baggage will be weighed and if it exceeds the free baggage allowance, you will pay for the excess at the airport counter.

Like as I said before, you can actually avoid this excess baggage cost simply by packing light. How to pack light, first by packing what is necessary and secondly, by reading this post about how to pack.

Make sure you pack only the items that are acceptable. Some items are prohibited, that is you are not allowed to travel with it via plane. You can choose any other means of transportation to transport them. If you are packing, make sure you seal your bag very well to avoid theft.

Is there anything you would like to know about baggage allowance? Let us know in the comment section. We will respond as soon as possible.
