Side Note: The Meaning of Express and normal Rides

With this increase, the Nigerian Railway Corporation, also, added another service to cater to business travellerss and others that are in a hast to reach their destination. The new services are the Normal and express ride.

Express Ride: Express ride as the name implies means that it is a non-stop ride. The train will only stop at Kubwa and Idu stations.

Normal Ride: This is exactly opposite of express service. The train will stop at all the train stations along the Abuja to Kaduna route.

Also, a luggage carriage van has been added. If you have lots of luggage, worry less, there is a baggage van for you.

Anyone that has travelled from Abuja to Kaduna by train will attest to the fact that the Abuja – Kaduna train is a way better compared to any other train services we have in Nigeria. I can bet that the Abuja – Kaduna train services will beat anyone that is used to Nigeria public facilities service expectations.

It is a known fact that Nigeria lags behind in terms of maintaining public facilities (our maintenance culture is zero) but that’s not the case of Abuja to Kaduna train service. As at the time of publishing this article, the train and the terminals are still clean and well organized with on-time departure.

Abuja to Kaduna by Train: Schedule, Cost and Experience

The Experience

The first time I travelled from Abuja to Kaduna was when a team of travel bloggers came to Abuja for “Abuja city tour” sponsored by travelstart. The second time was after the annual Abuja Jabama (M.I.C.E) event organized by the Akwaaba Travel Market. During the tour and event, we planned to tour Kejuru castle in Kaduna and we decided to go by train.

As you all know this is a modern era, we expected to get all the necessary information we need online and if possible purchase our ticket ahead of time.  After surfing the internet for a while, we saw the Nigeria Railway Corporation website and we thought all the answers to our queries will be answered. Lo and behold, the website was almost empty. The navigation was poor and not user-friendly.

Abuja to Kaduna by Train: Schedule, Cost and Experience
Ghanaian tour operators

We hit the rock when we discovered that we (passengers) cannot purchase the tickets online unlike the airline where passengers can book ahead of time. In their own case, passengers have to go to the train station in order to make a booking. After that ugly experience, we were able to get information on the train schedule especially the departure and arrival time.

From the information we got, it was stated that the departure time is 7 am prompt so we had to plan on how to arrive at the station before departure time and also to get our tickets.

I left my house as early as 5 am in order to arrive at the station before my colleagues will arrive since we stayed at different locations. Luckily for me the moment I arrived, that was when my colleagues arrived too and we moved to get our tickets.

Abuja to Kaduna by Train: Schedule, Cost and Experience
Abuja to Kaduna Ticket sample

As at then, First Class tickets went for N1,500 while economy tickets were N1,050. We wanted one person to purchase the ticket on our behalf instead of all of us to queue for the ticket. Surprisingly, the ticket sales rep refused. She said we can only purchase one at a time that means we all must queue to get our ticket by ourselves. To worsen the whole issue, passengers cannot purchase return ticket at the same station. You can only purchase at the return station.

We could not get the first class from Abuja so we opted for the economy class. After that, we moved to the waiting lounge which was still looking neat and well maintained. After some minutes, we moved to board the train.

Onboard The Train

I have already published an article on the different kinds of people you will meet onboard the train, you can read it here. Our seat number was indicated on the ticket so the moment we entered the train, we went straight to our seats. On the economy, the seats are arranged 3 in a row while in the first class it is two in a role.

At exactly 7 am prompt the train left Idu station to the next station. After 20 minutes we got to the next station (Kubwa station) where we had 5 minutes dwelling time. During this dwelling time, some passengers will drop while some entered.

On entertainment, there were televisions hanged on each coach showing movies. I observed that some of the televisions had technical issues, they were not displaying properly.

If you were unable to prepare breakfast because of time, don’t worry there are foods available for purchase. The foods are rice, moi-moi, meat pie, tea, coffee, soft drinks etc. Midway into the journey; we bought meat pie and soft drink. The meat pie is N300 and it was yummy and worth the amount. I even bought extra for myself.

Abuja to Kaduna by Train: Schedule, Cost and Experience
Food vendor on-board the Abuja to kaduna Train

On board the train, there are medical personals and security men. So there is nothing to be scared or worried about. The train is well secured and safe for all passengers.

The train was not that fast (not a speed train) but the journey from Abuja to Kaduna was really smooth and hitches free. We stopped at Kubwa, Jere, Rijana and finally arrived Rigasa the last station in Kaduna around 9.40am. That means, from Abuja to Kaduna by train is approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes. From Rigasa, we took a taxi to Kejuru for the day tour.

Returning

Since we were unable to purchase our return ticket at the Idu station, we left Kejuru Castel early so that we will get to Rigasa on time. We arrived at the train station early enough and we got the first class ticket this time. We passed through the same security process and board. We left Rigasa exactly 6 pm. The first class, to some extent, is better than the economy. There is enough space and if you are lucky, you will get a centre table where you can relax and do your work.

As a first class passenger, you are free to go to any of the coaches. You can move without hindrance, unlike the economy passengers that are restricted to the economy cabin alone. There is also a mini bar at the first class cabin.

Getting to the Stations

Idu station, Abuja

The Idu station is located in a remote area. Although, the road leading to the station is in good condition and motorable. There are no commercial vehicles plying the road so you either arrange for a cab to drop or pick you at the station. There are road signs along the road.

Abuja to Kaduna by Train: Schedule, Cost and Experience
Idu Station Abuja

If you cannot afford the high price, you can take a cab and drop at Berger (it’s a very popular place in Abuja) from there, enter a taxi going to Karmo and stop at the last bus stop or tell the driver to stop you where you can get a bike to Idu industrial layout. From there, take a bike to the Idu station. The road from Karmo to Idu is somehow scary and lonely. There are no residential houses along the road. So, be careful.

From Berger to Karmo is 100 while Karmo to Idu with a bike is 200. Plus or minus its less than 500 from Berger (under the bridge) to the train station. A drop will be around 2,000 per way. I strongly recommend you take a cab to the station if you are new because of the route.

Kubwa, Abuja

Rigasa, Kaduna

Either you are coming from Sabo, barnawa etc ( generally called Kaduna South) Kaduna town, you can stop at kano road, there you will get bus going to Rigasa the train station for like #70

I finally squeezed out time from my schedule to ride the Abuja Metro Light Train that was commissioned recently by President Muhammadu Buhari.

It was a nice experience and I enjoyed myself. You can read more on the train in this article here.

I decided to write this in order to beat down your expectations. The moment we Nigerians hear about the train, lots of things will be running through our mind. Some will start comparing it to the type they saw in one American movie.

Ohhh! Hope it’s fast and secured. What about the cost, security nko. Toor, I don’t want to go there and I will not see anybody. This and more are some of the questions people ask.

Below are some of the things you need to know about the Abuja metro light rail

The train does not look new and hey it’s not a high-speed train. It takes 20 minutes to move from the Abuja metro station (central Area) to Idu station and another 20 minutes to move from Idu station to the airport station.

It will observe 5 minutes dwelling time at the Idu station before going to the airport or to the metro station. That means it takes 45 minutes to move from the central area (Metro station) to the airport. If the distance is 30km, calculate the speed of the train using the time stated above. ***Wink.

Please note that there is no restroom/lavatory on board the train, so mind what you eat and make sure you eat light else it’s gonna be a hell damn ride for you. Hope you grab.

Abuja Metro Light Rail: All You Need To Know (Video)
Hooks to hold hands in the Abuja metro train

For latecomers, the train cabin was designed in such a way that it has hooks for you to hold your hand and stand all through your journey. What I am trying to say is this, there is a provision for passengers to stand and don’t mind there is a place for you to hold your hand and enjoy/suffer all through the journey.

You can only buy a one-way ticket. Unlike the airline, there is no provision for passengers to buy a return ticket. The reason is what I don’t know. So, passengers have to buy their tickets separately.

For now, you cannot buy the ticket online.

All passengers are expected to be at the stations 30 minutes before departure. Ticket counters close 5 minutes before departure. There is no African time.

There is a standby taxi waiting at the metro station that will convey passengers from the metro station to area one, Wuse through secretariat and Berger.

I saw another side of Abuja. The train rail passed through the villages in Abuja. The only beautiful house along the track is the newly commissioned Economic and financial crime commission (EFCC) headquarters. Every other ones are thatch houses.

Passengers can have a clear view of the famous rock in the Nigeria – Zuma Rock.

The train is safe and secured. There is still need to watch your luggage.

The price varies according to age, destination and physical condition. (Check the full price here)

PS: All that the above observations like ticket price, time, schedule etc. may change any time and any day.

I was opportune to join the Abuja light train from the Abuja metro station to the airport and from the airport back to the metro station. It was indeed a great experience for me and other passengers that joined the train ride.

The Beginning (Getting To The Station)

I joined the second train for the day from Abuja metro station to the Airport. The Abuja Metro station is located at the Central area (473 Constitution Avenue, Central Business District, Abuja) might be a bit difficult to locate for first timers; the popular landmark close to the metro station is the Churchgate.

I took a taxi from Transcop Hilton to the metro station. As I said earlier, the metro station is not all that popular, so I had to direct the taxi driver that took me on the routes to follow until we got there.

Abuja Train: Experience, Ticket Cost, Time And Direction
Abuja Metro Light Train coming to the Metro station from Idu Station

At The Terminal (The Metro Station)

I arrived at the Abuja Metro Station a few minutes before departure and went straight to the ticketing area to get my ticket. The ticketing area is relatively different from that of Abuja – Kaduna line. The metro station is a one-storey building painted in ash colour with the Abuja Metro station boldly written in front of the building. Passengers have to pass through the security scanner before proceeding to the ticket counter for their tickets.

Abuja Train: Experience, Ticket Cost, Time And Direction
POS Machine at the Abuja Metro Station

There are two methods of payment at the station. First is by cash. All you have to do is walk to the ticket sales representatives, tell them your destination, hand over the cash and they will print your ticket for you. The second method is via a POS machine. If you want to pay via the POS machine, you have to insert your ATM card, select your destination, and click pay. The machine will print your ticket immediately.

After getting my ticket, I joined other passengers to seat in the waiting seats in the ticketing area. There are seats for the general public and also for the VIPs.

Abuja Train: Experience, Ticket Cost, Time And Direction
VIP waiting section at the Abuja Metro Station

There is a restaurant at the terminal where passengers can have their meal. Though I don’t know the kinds of foods the offer, from the look of things, I guess the will have a good menu. So if you missed your Breakfast or Lunch, don’t worry, you can have a good meal at the metro station.

The Boarding

We were called to board 10 minutes before departure time and we had to queue for ticket confirmation. All passengers presented their tickets for checking and confirmation before boarding.

On Board The Train

The moment the ticket checker confirmed my ticket, she allowed me to move to the train. I moved in immediately and sat down. On board the train, I noticed there was no cabin attendant, no lavatory and there was no security on board. The seats are arranged in linear form and there is a provision for standing. That means if you are not lucky to get a seat on time, you will stand for 40 minutes if you are going to the airport and 20 minutes if you are going to Idu station. That’s a long ride friend.

Just a few minutes past 20:30 we departed the Abuja Metro station. After 20 minutes, the train stopped at Idu station before going to the airport. Idu is just like the train hub. That is, all train coming to Abuja, will stop at Idu first before moving to other stations.

We had five minutes of dwelling time at the Idu station. During the dwelling time, some passengers alighted at the station while others joined us to the airport. Then, we moved for another 20 minutes ride to the airport where we all disembarked from the train.

In just a few days after installing CCTV cameras at the airport, many passengers are now relying on the CCTV for their missing luggage. Last week a Facebook user, Dayo Adedayo narrated how he lost his bag and went to the security unit where the CCTV reviewed how his bag was picked up by a Chinese group.

Not long after that, a couple was unable to leave Nigeria for their emergency medical trip to the United State of America because of their mysterious missing passport. Mrs Tourism United Nations World, Ebele Enemchukwu shared this on her Facebook timeline. The couple also relied on the CCTV camera to fish out the perpetrator.

Extract from the CCTV footage

The first picture from the CCTV Footage showed the passport, the actual owner of the passports and the lady that took the passport.

The next picture showed when she took the passport and looked at the passport. I guess she saw that it is not her own. The question is why did she take the passport when she has confirmed that the passports are not her own.

The next picture reviewed where the real owners of the passport were while the lady walks away with passports with boarding passes that is not her own.

MISSING INTERNATIONAL PASSPORTS AND A MEDICAL EMERGENCY!!!!!

Three days ago (June 29, 2018), our family friends (husband and wife) got checked into British Airways, en route to USA through London Heathrow for the husband’s medical checkup and were at the boarding gate at 7:30am waiting to board the aircraft at the departure lounge of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja when their passports disappeared ‘mysteriously’. Thankfully, CCTV footage revealed that a female passenger who was travelling with a man suspected to be her husband took them 😮. Reasons for this are still unclear. What is clear however is that the woman picked up 3 passports which had 2 boarding passes in them, looked at them, confirmed they weren’t hers, but took them anyway. Abuja Airport security and BA staff notified UK security immediately, and announcements were made on board. The case has been formally reported to the Abuja International Airport DPO.

As we speak, July 2, 2018, both husband and wife have been deprived of their medical leave by this act of …….??? For now, all that is needed is for the lady to be identified. Hopefully, she took them with the intention of returning them. Or what use is a person’s passport to another? Beats me! Wonders shall indeed never end. Please let’s be extra careful at Airports and other public places. Please feel free to share this post. If you know something that might help, please share. Thanks and God bless you.
Ebele Enemchukwu.

One of Linda Ikejis blog reader who witnessed the event said he saw the couple looking as if they were mad. He also said it was announced onboard calling on the perpetrators to return the missing passport.

My family was on that flight we were almost the last to board and saw them frantically looking for the passports and boarding passes. We all thought the lady was crazy. They announced a few times on the flight for anyone who mistakenly took the passports. So sad I thought they made the flight …the man looked ill …sad…why would she do that???

As at the time of posting this report, nothing has been said concerning the missing passport. Though, the security agents both here in Nigeria and abroad are working to fish out the lady and the man that involved in this act.

PS: Sage traveller, be extra careful at the airport. Travel light and make sure all your baggage are with you at all time. At the airport, everyone is a suspect.

Have you misplaced any of your property before at the airport? If yes how did you find it?
