In other to allow flights around the world to enter the United Arab Emirates, passengers were required to produce a negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test within 72-hours of departure. Some high-risk countries were required to take another covid-19 test at the United Arab Emirates Airports.

In the case of Nigeria passengers, Emirates asked all passengers to conduct a rapid diagnostic test (RDT) at the airports in Lagos and Abuja 4 hours before flight departure. Emirates proposed this rapid diagnostic test (RDT) due to the high number of fake covid-19 results produce by travellers from Nigeria.

This rapid diagnostic test (RDT) proposal was not accepted by the Nigerian government and they asked emirates to suspend flight operations. On the 18th of March, 2021, Emirates suspended flight to and from Nigeria until further notice.

Since the flight suspension, negotiation has been going on between the Nigerian government authorities and the United Arab Emirates authorities.

Emirates airline has reconsidered and relaxed its travel requirements. Instead of the rapid diagnostic test (RDT) and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test within 72-hours of departure, Emirates proposed a 48 hours polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test.

On the side of the Nigerian government, the Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Musa Nuhu, said Emirates flight operations from Nigeria to the United Arab Emirates will start soon noting that negotiation is going on well.

During a Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) about COVID-19, Mr Nuhu said the outcome of the discussions, would be revealed within 48 hours.

“As regards the issue of Emirates Airline resumption of flight to Nigeria, the PSC deliberated extensively on this matter, and the gap has been significantly closed between the position of Nigeria and the United Arab Emirate (UAE).

“They have met some of our requirements, and we are just waiting for one confirmation.”

When our team checked the emirates website, we noticed that there are flights available from next month in May. You can watch the video above for more details. This is not a confirmation that the flight will resume in May but we hope they will resume soon as stated.
