The Nigeria presidential steering committee on covid 19 will soon fix a date for the resumption of international flight services on Port Harcourt International Airport (PHC), Omagwa and Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu (ENU).
Recall that in March 2020, all the airports in Nigeria were suspended from all forms of flight activities. The airport suspension was to curb the spread of coronavirus in the country.
Last year September 2020, domestic airlines were cleared to resume domestic flights operation. The international flights were scheduled to resume operations in different phases. Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja were the first airports to resume international flights operation last year.
Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), Kano has resumed international flights services after Ethiopian Airline and Egypt Air operated special flight services from the airport.
According to the Director-General of Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Musa Shuaibu Nuhu, Enugu Airport and Portharcourt Airport will soon join the list of opened international airports.
“Three airports: Kano, Port Harcourt, and Enugu, were declared by the PTF to resume international flights. Kano has resumed, Port Harcourt is almost there, just a few things to go, and in the next couple of days, we expect Port Harcourt to be released for resumption of international flights.
“Hopefully, in a couple of weeks, Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu will join the list making a total of five international airports that will resume international flights.”
Initially, Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu and Port Harcourt International Airport (PHC), Omagwa were supposed to open for international flights on the 3rd of May 2021 and 15th of April 2021 respectively.
According to ThisDay report on why the airports are yet to open, it was reviewed that the low turnout of passengers may be the reason airlines are not ready to start operations in Enugu and Portharcourt.
