The new Bantayan Island Airport is located in Barangay Okoy, Santa Fe. Considered as “Paradise of the North”, this town is highly dependent on tourism. Santa Fe was featured in a local movie entitled “I Found My Heart In Santa Fe” which showcased its amazing sites. It is not surprising that the Department of Tourism cited Santa Fe as the seventh most visited site in the country and ranked as the first for the province for the year 2019.
Governor Garcia along with MCIA general manager Steve Dicdican inspected the airport’s finishing works of the 1.2-kilometer runway extension last October 17. The airport can be easily reached through a 20 to 30-minute flight from the Mactan-Cebu International Airport. The short flight will likely serve as an additional inducement for tourists not to skip the island.
On its maiden flight to the airport, Cebu Pacific Air carried members of the media and social media vloggers and influencers who joined the “mini- Suroy-Suroy” or mini tour to the island. They visited all the tourist spots in the three towns of Bantayan Island. The Governor told the mayors attending the PDC meeting that surely the people of the island who have been suffering because of loss of income and livelihood due to the pandemic, would be very happy to know that the local government is preparing all the tourism activities as we approach the new normal.
Meanwhile, the Presidential Assistant for the Visayas, Secretary Michael Lloyd Dino, lauded the GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (GMCAC) as it celebrates its sixth anniversary this November. The GMCAC is a Filipino-Indian private consortium that operates the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) for the past six years. India’s GMR Infrastructure, in partnership with Filipino conglomerate Megawide Construction Corp., is operating and developing MCIA through a 25-year concession with the government. It has developed the MCIA into a strategic doorway for goods and services to be brought in and out of Cebu in a safe and swift manner making Cebu and the rest of the Visayas a competitive and attractive destination.
