British Airways British Airways is the flag carrier of the United Kingdom. Despite that nationalistic-sounding tag, British Airways is not a state-owned airline. BA was privatised in 1987 & is now wholly owned by IAG, an Anglo-Spanish airline consortium.
International Consolidated Airlines Group, S.A. (IAG) is a multi-national holding company registered in Spain with its corporate headquarters in London, UK. IAG owns majority stakes in a number of large airlines including BA (100%), Iberia (100%) & British M International (BMI).
Nigeria Air is the latest effort by Nigeria to own a national flag carrier decades after the end of the glorious years of the long-defunct Nigerian Airways and the ill-fated Virgin Nigeria experiment by the Obasanjo administration.
The Buhari administration deploying the current ownership, management and corporate governance structure for Nigeria Air which is a clear departure from what was obtained with the defunct Nigeria Airways that majorly contributed to the latter’s demise is very commendable.
That may be the major reason why Nigeria Air will be a success story whereas Nigeria Airways and Virgin Nigeria failed (with the long history, record and success of Ethiopian AirlinesEthiopian Airline is the flag carrier of Ethiopia and is wholly (100%) owned by the Ethiopian government.
